According to TimesOnline, “The internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds. ”

Building these sites, attracting millions of users and then selling out to a bureaucratic organization, seems very familiar these days and is happening more often than not. They do realize it will be used millions in the future, but the million (or billion J ) dollar question is – will it stick? More precisely speaking, will they last, more than the usual 5-7 year shelf life?

The Economist recently provided some much needed coverage in this area.

China has over-taken the United States as the country with the most internet users in the world.

China now has 220 million people connected to the internet, compared to the U.S.’s 217 million, with 200,000  people registering each day.
